Kigali, Rwanda
Lying at the heart of Africa, Rwanda is one of the most dynamic travel destinations. Musanze
For most travellers, Musanze (Ruhengeri) is the preferred staging post on their way to the magnificent Volcanoes National Park, one of the best places in East Africa to track the mountain gorilla. Since permit holders are required to check in at the park headquarters in nearby Kinigi at 7am on the day of tracking, staying in Musanze is a much safer option than leaving from Kigali at the crack of dawn. Musanze is a pleasant enough town to explore on foot, and it’s situated near a number of interesting natural sights, with the massive Virunga volcanoes looming to the north and west.

Gorilla Trekking
Expert local guides will bring you face to face with silverback gorillas in the Parc National des Volcans. You will spend between 3-10 hours tracking one of the official gorilla family groups through hillside paths, sometimes crawling through dense vegetation which can at times be challenging. Only limited visitor permits are available daily in order to conserve the habitat that the mountains live in, which makes early booking essential to avoid disappointment. Under guidance from the best, most highly trained people for the job, you find yourself face-to-face with something that seems so unequivocally human, it takes your breath away. An early start and a trek through dense rainforest is totally worth it for the privilege of spending an hour with these fascinating mammals. Youngsters may show off and huge silverbacks may beat their chests, but nothing beats just witnessing a gorilla family as they go about their daily business, chomp on bamboo, and watch you in return. It is no wonder that a gorilla trekking safari is often referred to as ‘the most memorable in the world’.
